These androgens can disrupt the hair growth cycle, causing hair follicles to shrink and produce thinner, shorter hair. Additionally, high levels of insulin associated with PCOS can also contribute to hair loss by further increasing androgen production.
Hair thinning associated with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) can affect confidence and wellbeing. At The Hair Clinic, we offer a personalised approach that combines assessment of hormonal factors with treatments aimed at supporting hair growth and improving hair density.
Our aim is to understand what is contributing to your thinning and develop a treatment plan suited to your health, hair-loss pattern and goals.
PRP Therapy
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses your own platelets to support hair follicle activity. A small sample of blood is collected and processed to concentrate the platelet-rich plasma, which is then injected into selected areas of the scalp.
Platelets contain growth factors involved in tissue repair and cellular signalling. Research suggests PRP may improve hair density and thickness in women with female pattern hair loss, making it a useful non-surgical option for suitable patients. Although PRP does not correct the hormonal imbalance associated with PCOS, it may complement treatment directed at hormonal contributors to hair thinning.
PDO Thread Treatment
Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are fine, absorbable threads carefully inserted into selected areas of the scalp. Early research has reported improvements in hair measurements in women with female pattern hair loss, making this an additional option to discuss during consultation. Your consultation will explain the potential benefits, limitations and suitability of PDO threads within your treatment programme.
Hormonal Support and Medication
Addressing hormonal contributors is an important part of managing PCOS-related hair thinning. Following medical assessment, medications such as spironolactone may be considered to reduce the effects of androgens on hair follicles.
Anti-androgen treatment may be trialled in suitable women with female pattern hair loss, although evidence specifically in PCOS remains limited. Treatment selection includes discussion of your medical history, other medications and pregnancy plans. Effective contraception is needed when pregnancy is possible because anti-androgens can harm a developing baby.
A Combined, Personalised Approach
Your plan may bring together appropriate medication, established hair-growth treatments such as topical minoxidil, PRP and consideration of PDO threads. These options serve different purposes, allowing care to be tailored to your individual needs. The additional benefit of combining PRP and PDO threads has not yet been established.
Before any treatment, we discuss the expected benefits, potential side effects and aftercare. Progress is reviewed over time, with adjustments made according to your response. Results vary, and ongoing treatment may be needed to maintain improvement.
