Specialist Compounded Medicine refers to a custom-made medication prepared by a pharmacist specifically for an individual patient, usually on the prescription of a specialist doctor when standard commercially manufactured medicines are not suitable or available. These medicines are individually formulated to meet a patient’s specific clinical needs, such as a customised dose, a unique combination of ingredients, or an alternative form of delivery (for example creams, lozenges, capsules, injections, or topical solutions). Compounded medicines are generally more expensive than standard pharmacy prescriptions. This is because they are made individually for each patient rather than mass-produced by pharmaceutical companies. The compounding pharmacist must source specialised ingredients, prepare the medication in controlled conditions, perform additional quality and safety checks, and often produce only a small quantity at a time. This labour-intensive, small-batch preparation process, along with the cost of specialised ingredients and compounding facilities, typically results in a higher price compared with standard commercially manufactured medications.
